Hi,

I was reading another forum post about SEO and it said to check your site for errors using http://validator.w3.org/ as "you must have 0 errors on this validator to be a good website, and google love good website".

I typed in my homepage http://www.myfavouritepubwalks.co.uk/shopping/ and it highlighted 219 errors and 41 warnings which was alarming. However, when I checked the detail I found that many of these are imbedded into the basic VP-ASP code so I wanted to check if these errors are real or not. I have included just a few types below but you can see the full list at
www.myfavouritepubwalks.co.uk%2Fshopping%2F&charset=%28detect+automatically%29&doctype=Inline&group=1&user-agent=W3C_Validator%2F1.3+http%3A%2F%2Fvalidator.w3.org%2Fservices" target="_blank">http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.myfavouritepubwalks.co.uk%2Fshopping%2F&charset=%28detect+automatically%29&doctype=Inline&group=1&user-agent=W3C_Validator%2F1.3+http%3A%2F%2Fvalidator.w3.org%2Fservices

2. Required attribute X not specified

e.g. Line 12, column 45: required attribute "TYPE" not specified

3. End tag for X omitted, but its declaration does not permit this

e.g. Line 284, column 5: end tag for "TABLE" omitted, but its declaration does not permit this

4. End tag for element X which is not open

e.g. Line 46, column 484: end tag for element "P" which is not open

Can you take a look at the errors identified by the validator tool and advise if these are mistakes in the coding or not please.

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

It seems most mistakes are html tags that are not properly closed. You would need to make changes directly to the files to fix this.

Hope this helps!

Thank you guys. It does look like I can work my way through these to hopefully correct them as you say. As my knowledge and experience is limited in these matters, my question was also whether these are important errors or not as it would be surprising to have so many errors built into the VP-ASP standard pages if they were really a problem. So I was wondering whether they may actually be unimportant and not needing fixing at all.

What would you say please?

Thanks for the help.

Hi Leigh,

Problem is your version is about 9 years now. The latest version is quite different to the one you are using.

I would probably spend the time updating if only to make sure all boxes are ticked for your site.

Thanks

Hi Cam,

OK, thanks for the quick reply and advice. It sounds like it will be worth my while to work my way through these to be on the safe side.

Thanks and regards,

Thanks Diego, I will have a go at fixing these errors myself as I am guessing that upgrading will give me all sorts of issues with customised pages that I probably will not know how to fix on my own.
Thanks for the support.
