Currrently I have 3 indepedant installs of VPASP on the same server. In the config file I have unique values set in each of the shop$config.asp files for each of the carts e.g.
site 1, file 1
const xshopid="VPASP_site1"

site 2, file 2
const xshopid="VPASP_site2"

site 3, file 3
const xshopid="VPASP_site3"

By default the cart is placed in a sub-directory "shopping".
Can I rename the shopping directories for each of the sites to to site1, site2 and site3 repectivly and protect them by the same SSL certificate and access them via
https://vpasp.mydomain.com/site1
https://vpasp.mydomain.com/site2
https://vpasp.mydomain.com/site3

Additional notes.
All three sites (site1, site2, and site3) have dedicated MS SQL databases. logins, etc.

assuming that you've got a certificate for the subdomain (not just the domain) then I don't see any reason why that shouldn't work fine; as far as I know ssl doesn't care about the folder, only the domain/subdomain (I think it needs to be very precise on that front, eg if your certificate is for www.mysite.com and you browse https://mysite.com (ie without www) then the certificate would mis-match), so you'd need to ensure that before you get to ssl pages the customer is forced onto the precise subdomain (which would also help to minimise dropped sessions)

see also our notes which explain about session dropping and domain/subdomain redirection etc on this addon:

all that assumes that you have a dedicated ssl certificate, and don't use shared ssl.

I don't know what you mean by "all that assumes that you have a dedicated ssl certificate, and don't use shared ssl."

I want to share an SSL cert for multple carts operating out of sub-directories in a website.

Yup, I understand the sub-domain.domain.top-level-domain and full URL matching to a SSL cert. And sessions/cookies tied to a full URL.

I want to use a common cert for customers that dont want /need a dedicated SSL (and this removes some setup overhead)

My question is more, will the independant carts play nice operating under the same url, under the same cert, and not mix-up sessions or transactions between the carts while servicing multple requests?

I will have a cert for

I appreciate your time and response by the way.
I do not know how the licensing works and because the sites are production I don't want to install copies on another server to test for fear it may somehow mess with the licensed installs.

it should be fine, as long as you make sure that each site has a different xshopid, and their xmysite option points to the relevant folder.

when you make the folder/subdomain change, it might also be worth changing the xshopid (eg from "site1" to "site1_001") to force the language values and various other bits to pickup the new location etc, just to be sure.

forgot to mention; if you've got any of our addons then you'd need the new subdomain added to the byz license key if it's not in there already; if that's the case just raise a ticket from our help area and we'll sort it out.
