Hi everyone,

Google have announced they will soon be changing the way their product search service works. It will no longer be free for merchants to submit their products; instead there will be an auction style bidding process in which the highest bidder gets to the top of search results (the same system as Google Adwords).

You can read what Google have to say about the changes in their blog post.

Google insist the new system will benefit both merchants and customers however I’m not convinced, small merchants simply do not have the budgets to compete with larger companies, meaning Google products will simply become a ‘sponsored search results’ list with larger companies always appearing at the top.

From a customer’s perspective, they will no longer be presented with a list of accurate and relevant search results, but instead a list of the companies who have paid the most money to appear there, which defeats the object of product search in the first place.

Personally I think that customers will begin to look elsewhere for more organic product search results when Google start to provide sponsored only listings.

There is a topic in our forum on this subject and it would be great to hear your thoughts on what effect this could have on the ecommerce world.

Please note if you currently use the SEO Toolkit Module we have made some updates to the Google feed, please submit a ticket to the helpdesk for instructions on how to upgrade to the latest version.

Happy Selling!

Gareth
