You may or may not be aware of how effective a blog can be in boosting your search engine rankings. Google loves nothing more than FRESH & RELEVANT CONTENT on a website and sites which are full of fresh & interesting content consistently enjoy higher search rankings.

The easiest way to add fresh content to your website is via a blog, just like the one you are reading now. The best thing about blog writing is ANYONE can do it; you don’t need to be the next JK Rowling to write a successful blog.

Most people I speak to say that they simply don’t know what to write or how to even begin writing, my advice is to just start writing and see what comes out, don’t worry about it being perfect, you can edit it afterwards, just get as many words down as you can, you’ll be surprised how easy it is once you start.

Follow the five tips below for advice on getting started:

1. Don’t just use your blog as a sales tool

Write articles that are interesting and useful to your customers, don’t constantly try to sell them new products. The most effective method is to add links to products / special offers that are relevant to the topic you are blogging on.

2. Choose a topic & stick to it

If you sell lawnmowers in your store, blog about lawns! You could blog about lawn care, feeding / watering, diseases, lawnmower maintenance, you get the picture.

As long as the content is relevant and interesting to people who love lawns, you have a blog.

3. Limit your posts

It’s easy to get carried away when writing a blog, set yourself a limit of around 400 – 500 words, anything longer will scare people off. If you have more to write, put it in another blog post.

4. Check Spelling & grammar

Ensure you use your computer’s spell checker, nothing says ‘unprofessional’ more than a blog post full of spelling & grammar errors.

5. Always be looking for inspiration

Even when you are not writing your blog, look out for topics you could blog on and make a note of them. Twitter is a fantastic place to search for blog ideas.

Why not set aside an hour or two this week to sit down and write your first blog post? I'm confident you will enjoy it, it may even become a new hobby.

Happy Selling!
